The original Horn & Hardart restaurant was opened by Joe Horn and Frank Hardart in Philadelphia. The year was 1888 and the location was a small storefront with barely enough room for a dozen customers. Joe and Frank were dedicated to providing their customers with simple, fresh foods. Eventually their reputation spread and the restaurant grew in size and then in numbers. Jump to 1902 when the two partners opened the first of what was to become many AUTOMATS. Originally a concept they discovered in Europe, they refined it to meet their requirements. Soon their Automats were serving thousands of Philadelphians every day. And, in 1912, the first Automat opened in New York City. Over the decades, the Automats became so popular and well known that they were part of the culture of these two cities. The Horn & Hardart coffee starts with high quality beans, and a lighter roasting method to bring out the flavor of the coffee to the best effect.
