The Book of Kells is one of the most mysterious of art treasures, a mystical testimony to early Irish Christendom. In the fifth, sixth, and seventh centuries, when the storms of the mass migrations had quieted down, Irish monks dedicated themselves to the mission of spreading the Christian faith throughout Europe. The age-old Irish-Celtic culture began to fuse with the impressions the monks gathered during their extended dangerous travels. In this period, called The Time of Scholars and Saints, the Irish monasteries were influential cultural and spiritual centres of Europe. At the height of Irish monasticism its most precious work was created, the Book of Kells. Facsimile Limited Editions are works of art in their own right. The Book of Kells is composed of two volumes, the facsimile itself and a scientific commentary, in a presentation case. The edition is limited world-wide to 1480 numbered copies of which 740 are reserved for Anglo-Saxon countries. All 680 pages of the manuscript were reproduced in the finest detail, in a format measuring approximately 33 x 25 centimeters. Created through a combination of the most up-to-date technical processes with qualified craftsmanship, the volumes are bound in the finest white leather. The sheets have been trimmed according to the original pages and bound by hand on four cords. Please note: this edition is specially ordered and delivery takes about two weeks.
